ENVY 26

"Jasper is really stressing us temi" Siji said to Ese. She always loved it when he called her temi. It means "mine" in Yoruba, but her love for it was not only because of its meaning, she also loved the sound of it.  They were in his new room. He had moved from Awolowo hall to Fajuyi hall and he had a room to himself on a medical floor. The medical floors are the topmost floors of the all the blocks in the hall, and they were originally reserved for medical students, but if you know the right people in the Student Union or have enough money you can get it. Siji had paid a huge sum to get a room for himself. The room was small and meant for two persons.
They were both lying on a hostel size mattress laid on the floor. It was not as big and thick as the mattress in her room but she felt comfortable enough on it, his chest served as her pillow and she enjoyed the way her head rose and fell with his chest as he breathed, the beating of his heart was also music to her ears. When it comes to intimacies, this was the closest they had come, she wanted more, she suspected he did too but he seemed to be taking his time and it was becoming infuriating to her. She decided she would have to push, but that was not the right time, he needed her to hear him out, so she decided to make do with what she could get at the moment.
"What has he done this time?" She asked
"Remember the assignment I told you he gave me?"
"Yea, the one about the............what is it again? Oh! The wave equation?"
"Yes, I found the equations for the crazy looking waves he gave us."
"Alongside Pago's too?"
"Yea, I helped Pago get his too. The thing now is, he's given us equations to convert to waves and these are not just simple waves. They are complex, it took me two weeks to finish the first"
"It took you two weeks because you did Pago's own too." She turned her head on his chest in order to look at him. "Are you going to help him with this one too?"
Siji sighed. "What's your point Ese?"
"My point is you shouldn't be helping Pago do his project, you won't be adding his grades to yours, will you? And he is even getting all the grades. Later you'll come complaining that your CGPA is nosediving while his is skyrocketing"
"That's not fair Ese, and you know it."
"I am sorry. It's just that I feel your friendship with Pago is parasitic at best. You teach him, do his assignments for him and sometimes his quizzes whenever he very conveniently misses class which is more often than not."
"He isn't the only one I teach Ese."
"But he is the only one whose quizzes you do and whose project you are now doing."
"I'm not doing his project for him temi, I am only helping him with this aspect of the project and it's because he isn't so good with the aspect."
"If the situation were reversed, would he do the same for you?"
"Of course, ye......" Siji began to say, then paused and thought for a short while
"He.....might not, but it won't be because of some selfishness or self-centeredness, it's just because of it's who he is, he barely has time for himself as it is."
"Just listen to yourself Siji, see how you are defending him. Your relationship with Pago isn't healthy, you are the one always coming to his aid. I'm yet to see him help you with something."
"He helps me too, he helped in getting this room"
"That's nothing compared to what you do for him."
"Ese, I don't weigh what we do for each other on a scale in order to check which outweighs which. I just do what I can as a friend."
"That's my point dear, do you think Pago has been doing his part as a friend? has he been a good friend to you?"
"Yes, I am yet to see anything to make me think otherwise."
"Can you trust him with something you cherish?"
He thought for a while before answering
"I think it depends on what the thing is"
"Can you trust him with your girlfriend? With me?"
Siji laughed "I can't trust Pago with a sister in purdah" he joked
"I am serious here Siji"
"What are you implying?" He asked, with a more serious tone.
"I mean.........I mean you know he was interested in me before and....and."
"Ese, I thought we have gotten that behind us. I know he was interested in you then, but he promised me it wasn't anything serious and since me, who he considers a close friend has a more genuine interest in you, he decided to let you go." He said, then added on a lighter note "besides Pago has a lot of girls than he can count, we shouldn't worry ourselves about him."
Ese wondered how gullible Siji could be a times, how could he have taken Pago's words at face value? He was too trusting, She could as well be dating Pago and he would not be any the wiser. For a brief moment she thought of telling him how Pago had been disturbing her but she banished the thought as fast as it came. Even though she seriously wanted him to review his relationship with his friend, she did not want to be the cause of their break up. So she decided to change the topic
"Siji?"
"Yes babe."
"Do you know we are yet to kiss?"
His chuckle made his chest make some funny noises in her ear"
"It's not funny."
"I am sorry."
"Have you ever thought of us kissing?"
"Yes, severally, on  Ma'ami's bed."
She gave a short laugh. "Then why haven't you done anything about it? Why haven't you made an attempt?"
There was a long uneasy silence, and as she was beginning to regret what she had just said, he spoke
"I have always thought of it, even that first day at the diner, and a times I dream of it, but maybe I don't want to act too forward, the thing is I want to earn your trust more than anything else, I want to show you I am not in this for personal gratification or the likes. I care about you, kiss or no kiss."
She raised her head to look him straight in the eyes "four years is too long a time to gain one's trust Siji, you had my trust within few months of our being together."
"I don't want it to look as if am taking advantage of you, I......"
"Will you please stop rationalizing things and kiss me." she whispered with her lips hovering over his. He moved his head forward to meet her lips. It was tentative at first, lips touching lips, then the tongues were introduced and they lost themselves in each other. They both had little experience but what they had sufficed, the feeling was electrifying for both of them. After a couple of minutes they disengaged to catch their breaths.
"How was it?" She asked huskily
"It was great" he replied, breathlessly
"Good, let's do it again."

He lay alone on his bed,  Bimpe or Gbemi had just left. He had been mixing up their names lately, aside for Stella who was his regular order, he could not seem to be able to remember their names. Good sex usually brought out the best in him. He noticed he usually found it easy to study after a great roll in the hay. It also made him think up great schemes, like the one he was thinking about that moment. He had come up with the idea after a session with Cynthia.
--Oh Cynthia!-- He thought.
He had missed her in a way. Though Stella was doing a good job, Cynthia still had some uniqueness about her. --don't they all?-- he thought wryly.
He still felt he owed it to Cynthia that the idea had come to him on her bed. It had been four years, and it had worked perfectly, it was just a semester left now and he was not just topping his department, he was topping the whole faculty. He was sure that he was going to graduate with the best CGPA ever in the faculty, all thanks to his dear friend. He closed his eyes smiling at his ingenuity as he imagined himself receiving the award from the Vice Chancellor. The feeling was orgasmic.
